Overview
A tie-back anchor is a steel tendon installed at an angle behind a retaining wall and bonded into competent ground past the soil's failure wedge. Once grouted and stressed, it holds the wall against the pressure of the retained ground.
Apex installs ground anchors at a prescribed angle to the horizontal using an anchoring machine — drilling to the specified depth, placing the anchor, grouting, and subsequent stressing up to the designed limit. Anchors are installed in single layers or in multiple layers as the excavation advances downward.
The advantage over internal propping is simple: the load goes backwards into the ground instead of across the hole. The excavation stays clear, plant moves freely and the substructure is built without working around struts.
Every anchor is proof loaded before it is relied upon, with readings taken through a load cell and digital indicator. Where the design requires monitoring during excavation, load cells are left in place.

Stressing the tendon holds the wall back against the retained ground, which allows a deep excavation to be opened without internal propping.
Apex drills the anchor hole on rake to the specified depth using an anchoring machine, places the strand tendon with the free length sheathed, grouts the bond length, and once the grout has gained strength stresses the anchor against the anchor head and locks it off at design load.
A single layer is one row of anchors, suitable where the retained height is modest. Multiple layers install successive rows as the excavation is taken down, each row picking up the additional load as the retained height grows.
Frequently they must, because the bond length has to reach beyond the failure wedge. That requires agreement from the adjoining landowner and the relevant authority, and it needs resolving at design stage — on a tight urban plot it can decide whether anchoring is viable at all.
Temporary anchors are de-stressed once the permanent structure can carry the load, though the tendon itself normally stays in the ground. Permanent anchors remain in service and require additional corrosion protection to the tendon.
